If you are a student considering enrolling in online classes, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve addressed some common questions from potential new students below.
One of the most basic questions asked when considering switching to Great Lakes Learning Academy (GLLA) after maybe finding us through a web search, or even being referred by a friend is: Do I qualify? The plain and simple answer is usually, yes, you probably do! There are few requirements to enroll at GLLA; check them out below.
Who can enroll?
- Students must be Michigan residents
- Students in grades 6-12
- Students must have Internet access
As you can see, GLLA provides an education for just about every high school student in Michigan. The list of reasons to switch to GLLA grows exponentially each day as we get to know each new student, and we can say with confidence that we have provided an alternative educational environment that fits every need!
How is GLLA different from my old school, and what aspects are the same?
Is this the right option for me?
- Flexible, personalized and structured academic schedule
- Safe environment
- Individualized attention from highly-qualified teachers, advisors and guidance counselors
- Access your classes anytime, from anywhere with an Internet connection
- Focus on your studies, get back on track to graduate or get ahead and graduate early
Making Friends in an Online School
Some students might fear that after switching to GLLA, they will fall off the face of the earth in terms of socializing with friends. This is a valid matter to properly address for active high school students. Although students won’t physically meet with their classmates every day, there are still plenty of opportunities to stay engaged with peers at GLLA!
We have several clubs for our 6-12th grade students to join. Participate in a coding challenge, create poetic word art, contribute articles to The Monitor blog, compete in a chess tournament: These activities can all be a part of the well-rounded student experience at GLLA.
There is a yearbook, graduation ceremony, school events and eSports teams! At GLLA, students can participate in eSports at the varsity (competitive) level, or as part of an eSports club which is non-competitive while they show off their skills in statewide meets against other Michigan varsity teams. We have Madden, Supersmash Bros and a few other leagues, check them out here.
Chromebooks Provided During Your Time at GLLA
We understand that not all students have access to a personal computer or laptop. To assist, the school will loan a Google Chromebook to any student that needs one. While enrolled with GLLA, you can receive a laptop to use for academic purposes. The laptop must be returned to the school at the time of withdrawal or graduation.
You can learn more about it here.
